Approved Budget

A plain-English definition of an approved budget and why it should not be mixed with recommended figures.

Independent and unofficial. Source-linked term.

An approved budget is the version after County Council action, when the Council has approved appropriations and the official budget record supports that label.

Montgomery County, Maryland’s budget process requires Council approval of the operating and capital budgets by June 1. Official OMB publication pages then list approved budget documents when they are available.

Why It Matters

Approved figures are the ones residents should look for when they need final county budget action for a fiscal year.

Common Misunderstanding

Do not call a recommended budget approved just because it is the newest document you found. The source must show Council approval or an official approved budget publication.
