County Contribution

A plain-English definition of county contribution and how it differs from the total MCPS budget.

Last updated: 2026-05-19

Independent and unofficial. Source-linked term.

County contribution means the local county-funded part of an agency or school-system budget.

For MCPS, the county contribution is not the same as the total MCPS operating budget. The total can also include state aid, federal aid, grants, fees, enterprise funds, and special revenue funds.

The FY27 Recommended county operating budget page lists both the total MCPS recommended operating budget and the recommended county contribution. Those figures should not be merged into one number.

Why It Matters

The county contribution helps residents separate local county funding from state aid, federal aid, grants, fees, and other school-system resources.

Common Misunderstanding

A larger total MCPS budget does not mean the county paid every added dollar. The source of the money matters.
